Description

Europe, south-east, central and east: 'Carte der Europaëïschen Türkey nebst einem Theile von Kleinasien in XXI. Blaettern ...'. Map showing place names, battlefields, places where peace concluded, depths, anchorages, roads, wayside crosses, caravan stops, castles, inns, post offices, residences, spas, factories, in area between 16° and 29°30'E, extended to show Rijeka and Odessa; and between 33° 20'N and 48°10'N. 6. Reference table. Scale: 2 inches to 55 miles; scale bars also in German, Turkish, Russian, French and Italian units. Beneath the title Turkish soldiers and civilians are shown opposite Constantinople. Statistical table. Table of geographical points. 22 sheets, each 42 cm x 63 cm; index sheet 19 cm x 4.5 cm on sheet 39 cm x 52 cm. Designed and drawn by Lieutenant Franz von Weiss, Austrian Army. Published by the Austrian Quarter Master General's Staff, 1829. Insets of Smyrna, Belgrade, Butrinto, Rhodes, 'Navarin' [Pylos], Bosporus and Constantinople, Dardanelles, Isthmus of Corinth, 'Prevesa' [Preveza] and Gulf of Arta, 'Canal der Dardanellen von Lepanto' [Rion Strait]. According to the FO 925 index, this map accompanied Lord A Loftus' despatch of 29 December 1853: see FO 64/359. A later edition, FO 925/3333, states that the map was originally prepared under the command of Field Marshal Prince Schwarzenberg.
