Chart of the Danube River from Semlin to the Black Sea : 'Navigations Karte der Donau von Semlin an bis zu ihrem Ausfluss ins Schwarzen Meer ...' Seven sheets. Shows islands, sandbanks, whirlpools, cataracts, place names; breadths and depths. Title in oval cartouche surrounded by Imperial Austrian insignia and cornucopia. Topographical notes. Scale: 3 inches to 2 German miles (scale bar also in Turkish miles). Survey begun by Captain von Lauterer, continued as far as Ruse by Freiherr von Herbert, and further surveyed and improved by Captain Freiherr von Tauferer. Engraved by Mansfeld. Published by Kurtzbeke, Vienna, 1789. Enclosed in Sir F Lamb's despatch number 59 of 22 May 1834 (see FO 7/248). According to Lamb, the manuscript additions indicate cataracts at Moldava and at Demir Capi [The Iron Gates] proposed to be removed by the Austrian Government.
