At top of map: 'Profile of the travelling route from the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains to the Bay of San Francisco'. Drawn by Charles Preuss by order of the Senate of the United States, Washington City 1848. Lithographed by E Weber and Co, Baltimore. Manuscript boundaries coloured green. The are copies of this map: two are certified by Major General Sir Henry James, one is dated 5 September 1871; another copy is certified by V Cameron-Colne, 20 October 1871.
