Above the title is an eagle surmounting a globe with the American continent rising from the sea. Decorative border with the American eagle at each corner. Scale: 1 inch to 110 miles. Statistical tables: distance and area, population, literacy, slavery, pauperism, crime, railroads. Inset maps of the world and of the Sandwich Islands. Engraved by L Lipman, New York. Published by Gaston and Johnson, New York, 1855. Certified as accurate by James P McLean, the General Land Office, Washington. Endorsed: 'Inclosed in Mr. Buchanan's Dispatch Separate of 6 October 1858'.
