Area in South Africa, Natal: Rorke's Drift. Two maps on one sheet: (1) Location map: roads, rivers, contours. Scale: 1 inch to 5 miles. Compass indicator. (2) 'Rorke's Drift commissariat stores, hospital [...] defended 22 Jan. [January] 1879': the plan shows first and last lines of defence. Scale: 1 inch to 30 yards. (Signed) Lieutenant John R M Chard, Royal Engineers [later awarded the Victoria Cross]. Prepared and printed in the Intelligence Division. Received from the War Office, 14 April 1879. Dimensions: 9 cm x 17 cm on sheet 38 cm x 50 cm.
