Description

North and central Africa. 'An account of the progress of the expedition to Central Africa performed by order of Her Majesty's Foreign Office, under Messrs Richardson, Barth, Overweg and Vogel, 1850, 1851, 1852 and 1853'. A volume describing the expedition with three maps showing routes (from Tripoli south to Yola, Nigeria), terrain, some districts and descriptions of tribes.

The maps are: (1) 'Map of part of Africa showing the Progress of the Expedition under Messrs Richardson, Barth, Overweg and Vogel in the years 1850-1853'. The first map, the frontispiece, has a border with portraits of the explorers [James Richardson, Adolph Overweg, Eduard Vogel and Heinrich Barth] and pictures of some of the tribes and places visited. (2) 'Map of part of Northern Africa showing the Routes of the Expedition under Messrs Richardson, Barth, Overweg and Vogel in the years 1850 and 1853'. (3) 'Map of part of Central Africa showing the Routes of the Expedition ... by Messrs Richardson, Barth and Overweg in the years 1851 and 1852'. Maps, illustrations and notes drawn and compiled by Augustus Petermann who also lithographed the maps. Published by Edward Stanford, London, and Justus Perthes, Gotha, 1854. Dimensions: (1) 62 cm x 98 cm; (2) 51 cm x 35 cm; 3) 51 cm x 35 cm.
