IDWO 776. Map of area now in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, Namibia. 'Map of Matabililand and Adjoining Territories Compiled in the Intelligence Division War Office 1889. Revised March 1890 from Mr F.C. Selous' Routes in Eastern Mashona Land of 1889'. Map of area between 19°E and 34°E and between 15°30' S and 24°30' S, showing rivers (coloured blue), lakes (coloured blue), swamps, hills, place names, kraals, boundary of British protectorate [of Bechuanaland], boundary agreed between Germany and Portugal as limiting their spheres of influence, comments on terrain, topography and fauna. Colour wash shows boundary as proposed by Lord Knutsford 15 October 1888, by Count Leyden 30 September 1889 and by Sir Henry Loch 5 March 1890. Manuscript additions show alternative boundaries proposed between Bechuanaland and German South West Africa, including the Caprivi area. Compiled and lithographed by J E Hawkins in the Intelligence Division, War Office, under the direction of Major J C Dalton, Royal Artillery, DAAC, October 1889. Stamped '(Uncorrected Proof) No 2'. Additional title in red ink affixed to upper left corner: 'Map to accompany Report on the Cartographical Aspect of the Anglo-German Boundary Question in and about Bechuanaland by Lt. Col [Lieutenant Colonel] Dalton D.A.A.G. 27.5.90.'. This report was transmitted by the War Office to the Foreign Office on 7 June 1890 and is in FO 83/1108. A pencilled note by E Hertslet reads: 'To be reduced to octavo size between longitude 26 and 19 only. Omit all colours, also above note in Red Ink'. Annotated in upper margin: 'Africa 73A' [Foreign Office Library reference].
