Description

Writs sent to bishops and others requesting information about various ecclesiastical matters, and returns to those writs.

Subjects include the value of benefices, tithes, the names of patrons and clergy presented to particular benefices at particular times, the tenor of proceedings in ecclesiastical courts, and the names and benefices of alien clergy.

There is also a bundle of returns made by bishops and sheriffs in connection with an inquiry undertaken in 1371 for taxation purposes into the number of parishes in England and Wales.

Most of these records were formerly included in C 47 and C 202
