The Statistics Commission was set up in June 2000 as an independant non-departmental public body body to help ensure official statistics are responsive to the public interest and to oversee the work of the Office for National Statistics. It was sponsored by HM Treasury. The Commission was replaced by the UK Statistics Authority on 31 March 2008 following the introduction of the Statistics and Registration Services Act 2007.
