Description

William Tallamy v. John Vivian: Tobacco shipped at Bideford (Devon) on board the ship called the "Peggy," of Padstow. Customs dues. Price of tobacco in 1719, &c., &c. "I.7. What was the com'on marketable price of tocacco p'pound weight in Bideford for exportac'on to Guernsey or forreign parts (the seller taking the drawback or debenture for the same) in July one thousand seaven hundred and nineteen, and what was the com'on price of tobacco p'pound weight of which the duty had been paid or secured if the same was not to be exported, and whether it be now or was then usual for the buyer or seller of tobacco for exportac'on to have the drawback of the duties?" "John Pascho, of Port Isaac, within the parish of Endelian, in the county of Cornwall, marriner (one of the defts. in this cause)." "To the seaventh interr'y this dep't saith that in regard he is unacquainted with the tobacco trade and haveing little or noe concerne that way, he cannott sett forth what the severall prices of tobacco were in Bideford in the month of July one thousand seven hundred and nineteen if the same was to be exported to Guernsey or any other forreigne ports. But hath heard and believes that the price thereof p'pound weight (the seller takeing the debenture or drawback for the same) was about three pence farthing p'pound in the said month of July one thousand seven hundred and nineteen. And that the com'on price thereof then at Bideford was seavenpence p'pound or more, where the duty had been paid or secured, if the same was not to be exported," &c., &c.: Devon; Cornwall; Guernsey.
