Description

Short title: Attorney General v Gough.

Plaintiff(s): The Attorney General, at the relation of Samuel Carter and others.

Defendant(s): Sir Henry Gough, kt, Sir John Bridgman, bart Sir Charles Holt, bart Thomas Tyrer, Humfry Wyrley, Henry Porter, John Cottrell, Christopher Horne, Thomas Russell, the elder, Moreton Slaney.

Subject of depositions: Free grammar school in Birmingham founded by Edward the Sixth. Surrender of the charter of King Edward the Sixth into the King's hands in the last year of King Charles the Second. Election of governors under the old and new charters. Election of schoolmasters. Revenues of said school and the expenses incidental to the election of governors. Touching the appointment of tradesmen of Birmingham as schoolmasters under the old governors, and complaint made of their incompetency to teach Latin. [The charter of the late King James is also mentioned, and the names of William Lord Digby, Sir Henry Gough, John Dod, and John Hinckley are mentioned as governors under the new charter].

County/place: Warwickshire.
