Description

Short title: Treby v Lawson.

Plaintiff(s): Sir George Treby, kt (Attorney General), informant.

Defendant(s): Francis Lawson, Henry Lawson.

Subject of depositions: Grant or lease of the Site of the late dissolved monastery or abbey of St Maryes, without the walls of the city of York, and in or near the suburbs of the same city, made by the late King James II (as is alleged) to the defendant Francis ( "reputed a Romish priest "). Whether said premises were devoted to "superstitious uses" i.e. the celebration of mass; the keeping of a school gratis for the teaching of Romish tenets. Alleged refusal of defendant Francis to pay taxes, i.e. hearth money, to the now King and Queen on application being made for same.

County/place: Yorkshire.

Date of commission: 21 February 1691.

Additional information: interrogatories and depositions taken 27 April 1691 at York.
