Description

Short title: Copley v Braithwaite.

Plaintiff(s): John Copley and his wife Beatrice.

Defendant(s): Edward Braithwaite.

Subject of depositions: Water corn-mill in Hawkeshead, called Hawkeshead Milne, formerly belonging to Nathaniel Nicholson (grandfather of the plaintiff Beatrice), and late of Daniel Nicholson (late father of plaintiff Beatrice), to whom Beatrice and her sister Judith Carus (married to George Carus) are co-heiresses. Touching the custom of "suite and soake alias socke alias soken" to the mills (i.e. grinding corn, etc) due from the inhabitants of the townships and villages of Colthouse, Hawkeshead, Loudthwaite, Highwray, Losowray, and Tockhouses (Lancashire). [Allan Nicholson and Susan Nicholson his administratrix, Mr Ditchfield, Mr Highlord, Mr Clerke, Mr Mosse, James Braithwaite, Charles Satterthwaite, William Satterthwaite, and James Rigg, are mentioned].

Date of commission: 28 November 1687.
