Description

Short title: Wharton v Bishop of Durham.

Plaintiff(s): Humfrey Wharton.

Defendant(s): Nathaniel Lord Bishop of Durham, Robert Dormer, William. Blackett, merchant, Barbara Sanderson, John Westgarth, John Mowbray, Richard Mowbray, Christopher Copperthwayt.

Subject of depositions: Manors of Stanhope and Wolsingham, the forest of Weredale, and lead mines, groves, and "vaines of lead oare or ure" lying within the parishes and forest Touching the officer called "the mooreman" or "mooremaster" of the mines, said to have been represented in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth, James I, Charles I and Charles II by Francis Pilkington, Sir George Bowes, William. Bowes, Edward Suertyes, George Wythers, Humphrey Wharton, Thomas Wharton, Richard Hutton, and the plaintiff. Touching the power and authority vested in, and the execution of the office of mooremaster as regards the licensing and permitting persons to dig and get lead oare in the mines belonging to the Bishop of Durham.
