Description

Short title: Wharton v Bishop of Durham.

Plaintiff(s): Humphrey Wharton.

Defendant(s): Nathaniel Lord Bishop of Durham, Robert Dormer, William Blackett, Barbara Sanderson, John Westgarth, John Mowbray, Richard Mowbray, Christopher Copperthwayt.

Subject of depositions: Manors of Stanhope and Wolsingham, the forest of Weredale, and lead mines, groves, and "vaines of lead oare or ure" lying within the parishes and forest Touching the officer called "The Mooreman" or "Mooremaster" of the mines, said to have been represented in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth James I, Chas I and Chas II by Francis Pilkington, Sir George Bowes, William Bowes, Edward Suertyes, George Wythers, Humphrey Wharton, Thomas Wharton, Richard Hutton, and the plaintiff. Touching the power and authority vested in and the execution of office of mooremaster, as regards the licensing and permitting persons to dig and get lead ore in the mines belonging to the Bishop of Durham, etc. etc. "A schedule or list of the names of several lead mines or groves of lead oare within the parishes of Stanhopp and Wolsingham, incident and belonging to the office of moore master, together with the names of the severall moores, fells, and enclosed grounds wherein the said lead mynes doe ly. ".
