Description

Short title: Duncombe v Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Plaintiff(s): Edward Duncombe, Richard Bowle, Henry Lucas, Simon Chamber.

Defendant(s): Mayor and burgesses of the town of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and the governors, stewards, and brethren of the fraternity of the Hostemen of said town.

Subject of depositions: Toll of 2d on every chaldron of sea coals sold to people not franchised within the port. The mayor and burgesses hold the town of the Crown at a fee-farm rent of £100. Whether such toll is due to the mayor. or to the Crown? Metes and bounds of port, town. Repairs of town, port, river. Survey. [A charge brought by one Connock against the corporation in the reign of Queen Elizabeth for levying the 2d. toll unduly, and grant by the corporation to the Crown, 42 Elizabeth of an imposition of 12d. per chaldron upon sea coal (upon renewal of their grant from the Crown); the grant of 12d stated to be in lieu of the arrears of the 2d toll alleged to be due to the Crown].
