Description

Short title: Bailiff of Stow-on-the-Wold v Chamberlaine.

Plaintiff(s): The bailiff and burgesses of the borough of Stow-on-the-Wold otherwise called Stow St Edward.

Defendant(s): Edmond Chamberlaine, Richard Bird, Henry Payne, Thomas Dunce, James Rose, Edward Reynolds, Rowland Edwards, Henry Butler, Edward King, William Sandall.

Subject of depositions: Borough and town of "Stow-on-th'olde" otherwise "Stow St Edward" (Gloucestershire), parcel of the late monastery of Evesham (Worcestershire); whether the manor and borough are distinct? whether the borough, was granted by the monastery to the bailiffs and burgesses of Stow; and whether they, Edmond Chamberlain, Robert Harbedge, William Page, Robert Fearnley, Edmund Collett, Richard George, John Collett, have received the profits since? Did Thomas Watson and Thomas Hannes, bailiffs of such monastery, govern the borough, or merely receive the rents, etc.? Were Henry Prowse and Nicholas Brent chosen bailiffs by the inhabitants of the town, or by Thomas Willoughby, gent, late owner of Stow Manor? Customs of manor touching appointment of bailiffs. Touching quo warranto against James White, lord of the manor, in reign of Elizabeth. Incorporation of borough. Survey. [The names of Bradwell and Donington Manors, Bartholomew Kyghtley, steward to Thomas Willoughby, Edmund Fryers, steward to Rowland Leigh, late lord of the manor, William Ballard, and Francis Greenham, steward to James White, Richard Byrde, steward to defendant Edmund Chamberlayn, now lord of the manor, are mentioned].
