Description

Short title: Beale v Arkenstall.

Plaintiff(s): Godfrey Beale, Robert Beale, Robert Lelfoole, Ralph Boyce, and others, Her Majesty's tenants of Whittlesey.

Defendant(s): Richard Arkenstall, William Stearman alias Stirman, Arthur Haynes, Christopher Pryor.

Subject of depositions: Manors of Whittlesey St Mary and Whittlesey St Andrew, in the Isle of Ely. Touching the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Ely in the manors. Customs of manors. Whether Her Majesty's tenants have been forced to pay "fines for watering of hemp and flax, both to the officers of the bishopric of Ely and also to Her Ma'tie in Her letes, for one and the same offence" etc. Touching the execution of the offices of "swanner ", "deputy swanner ", "cullger" and "bailiwick. ".

County/place: Cambridgeshire.

Date of commission: 26 June 1596.

Additional information: interrogatories and depositions taken 7 October 1596 at March in the Isle of Ely.
