PRO 30/22/23
1859 July 14-1865 Sept. 12
VOL. 23 Private correspondence. Lord Palmerston (P), prime minister and W. E. Gladstone (G), chancellor of the exchequer, to Lord John (from 1861 earl) Russell (JR), foreign secretary.
Volumes 20-23 contain in all about 540 letters from Lord Palmerston (P), prime minister, to Lord John (from 1861 earl) Russell (J.R.), foreign secretary. The correspondence, which includes an occasional reply or comment from Lord John and one letter fromthe Queen, covers a wide range of matters of common concern to the two statesmen over the period of Lord John's term of office, in the Commons and in the Lords, as foreign secretary. It highlights Lord Palmerston's passionate interest in foreign affairs and the letters subject Lord John to unceasing guidance and advice - and occasionally admonition - on the leading foreign questions of the day and on every aspect of the work of his department. Lord Palmerston's letters are from one of his two residences, 94 Piccadilly, W. and Broadlands (Hants) unless otherwise stated. Letters from W. E. Gladstone are from one of his two residences, 11 Carlton House Terrace and Hawarden (Chesh) or from 11 Downing St., unless otherwise stated. 1 vol.
