VOL. 16E Summary of Contents. Mainly political correspondence. (Note: throughout the year both W. E. Gladstone and Lord Clarendon were in continuous correspondence and consultation with J.R. and kept him in close touch with events and decisions). Politics and government. J.R. reaffirms (to Granville) his decision not again to take office, but he will "help the party in anyway that can be most useful" while they are in opposition (fs. 13-14). Correspondence with party colleagues on current and future legislation, voting tactics etc. Church rates legislation: Gladstone's proposals (fs. 165-7). Resignation of Lord Derby (Feb. 26); Disraeli's administration and defeat (Nov. 11) on Irish Church disestablishment. Parliament dissolved; general election; Liberal majority; Disraeli's Government resigns (Dec. 2). Gladstone's first administration: Bright and Lowe in the cabinet; Clarendon again foreign secretary. J.R. refuses Gladstone's offer of a cabinet post "without the weight of any other responsibility" (fs. 269-72). The Queen is not surprised at J.R's decision and feels he has "well earned the repose which he now seeks" (fs. 278-9). Correspondence: J.R.; W. E. Major question of Irish church disestablishment: Gladstone's legislative preparations. Question of Irish citizens in receipt of English union relief. Correspondence: J.R.; W. E. Gladstone; Archbishop Manning; R. Weale and others. Foreign affairs: Italy: the Roman question. Lord Clarendon's interview with the Pope and his adverse views of Garibaldi's second march on Rome (fs. 1-6). Foreign affairs: German States: question of postponement of unification. Clarendon considers that Bismarck "..... fears the democratic socialist doctrines of the Southern Catholics" (fs. 174-5). Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: the Trent affair: J.R's annoyance at Bright's accusations in the Times (fs. 267-8) and Bright's defence (fs. 289-92). Colonial affairs: Jamaica commission: Charles Buxton advocates clemency and non-prosecution of governor Eyre and seeks J.R's support. Personal: The Hudson-Elliot controversy revived: letters to Pall Mall Gazette and Morning Post from J.R.; Hon. G. Elliot; Sir H. Bulwer; Sir James Hudson; and correspondence of Lady Elizabeth Romilly; Lord Dunfermline; T. V. Lister; Arthur Russell; Hon. H. Elliot. Personal: Rollo Russell's education at Oxford; his curriculum and private tutoring fees. Correspondence: Revd. Dr. G. W. Kitchin.
