VOL. 16D Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda. Politics and government: Russell government out of office: final awards of honours, baronetcies etc.; letters to J.R. of farewell and thanks; Granville advises him not to "go much into Foreign affairs" in future debates (fs. 24-7). J.R's correspondence with Lord Clarendon, who reports rumours of Gladstone's eccentric actions in toy-shops thought to be due to overwork (fs. 69-72). Reform: the Conservative bill (Representation of the People Act, 15 Aug. 1867); J.R's correspondence with Gladstone and others; questions of Liberal party policy and parliamentary tactics; Clarendon disagrees with Gladstone's proposals to adhere to the terms of "our Bill" (fs. 97-101). Public parks: questions of lighting and night security: Lord Derby considers that to guard the whole park is "an absolute impossibility" (fs. 57-60). J.R's decision to renounce the party leadership: Gladstone's views on length of political life (fs. 348-53). Correspondence: J.R.; W. E. Gladstone; Lords Clarendon, Cowley, Grey; John Bright; and others. Flogging in the army: J.R's views (fs. 220-3). Education: H. A. Bruce's bill (laid on the table). J.R's correspondence with Jowett who tells him that "..... there could be no better or nobler ending of a great political career" than to take up the cause of education (fs. 243-96). Foreign affairs: Prussia and Austria: progress of Seven Weeks war. Clarendon considers that the German states' "great aspiration is unity" even under Bismarck (fs. 69-73). Austria defeated. Duke of Argyll chides J.R. with "..... an immoral leaning towards Prussia long ago" and suggests that her victory has made her an "object of general worship" (fs. 84-5). Foreign affairs: Austria, Italy, Venice and Rome. Odo Russell reports cession by Austria of Venetia to Italy, and that only the Roman question remains; he considers that "the Temporal Power (of the Pope) is doomed" (fs. 115-16). Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: Clarendon considers that "the Irish ticket" will increase animosity against England (fs. 69-72). Personal: Lord Amberley's marriage settlement: question of responsibility for legal costs. Correspondence: R. DuCane (f.86). Personal: Rollo Russell's education. Correspondence: Revd. H. M. Villiers; Prof. B. Jowett. Personal: Lady Russell reports the "piles of dust" and unanswered letters on J.R's table and his unconcern "..... it does very well - I dont answer them" (fs. 210-13). Personal: J.S. Mills' praise of J.R. (to Lady Russell, fs. 224-5).
