Description

VOL. 15E Summary of Contents. Correspondence relating mainly to foreign affairs. Foreign affairs: Austria: the commercial treaty: question of timber duties and other provisions. Correspondence: Lord Bloomfield; W. E. Gladstone, A. H. Layard; E. Hammond;W. Hutt; Duke of Somerset. R. Morier's state of Austria report (fs. 120-7). Foreign affairs: Prussia, Austria and Schleswig Holstein. The Queen's condemnation of Bismarck's "effrontery" and "iniquity" (Gen. Grey, fs. 11-13) but Palmerston considers it is "rather late" for the Queen's eyes to have been opened; he condemns conduct of Prussia and Austria towards the Duchies but he wants a strong Germany "..... to control those two ambitious and agressive powers, France and Russia" (fs. 77-80). Foreign affairs: Turkey, France and the Suez Canal: Sir H. Bulwer's denials of Layard's charges against him (fs. 52-5). Foreign affairs: Russia and Persia: suspicion of Russia's boundary policy. Correspondence: Sir A. Buchanan (fs. 7-10). Foreign affairs: Abyssinia: imprisonment of Consul Cameron and missionaries: arrangements for mission to King Theodore. Correspondence: A. H.
