VOL. 14G Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda relating mainly to Schleswig Holstein. (Note: the Queen's correspondence. Her views are transmitted through her secretaries, Gen. Grey and Sir C. B. Phipps, but there are copy extractsin this volume of her own letters at fs. 211-20. It is endent from the papers in this and other volumes that the Queen's intense pre-occupation with European affairs caused some harassment to her prime and foreign ministers. Politics and government: the Queen and court ceremonials; she expresses her "total inability" to undertake any public functions. Correspondence: Sir C. B. Phipps (fs. 197-9). Foreign affairs: Schleswig Holstein, Denmark and the European powers. The Queen's German sympathies (fs. 1-2 and passim); King of the Belgian's views (fs. 87-8). Question of provisions of Treaty of London (1852) and the new Danish constitution; Russia's opinion and the Queen's and cabinets' views thereon (fs. 122-53). France: Louis Napoleon calls for a congress of Europe, but J.R. considers his grounds too "vague" (fs. 59-66) and the plan is rejected. Lord Palmerston fears that "these cowardly Germans" are alarmed "at what they fancy the Emperor may do next spring, in Revenge for the failure of his Congress scheme" (fs. 165-8). Lord Dufferin reports that the emperor is "not ruffled" but that he will "weave a new webb to catch flies" (J.R. to Palmerston, fs. 171-5). Threatened invasion of Holstein by Germany and proposed installation of Prince of Augustenberg as duke; British government's "earnest request" to German Diet to submit to mediation (F.O. despatch to Sir A. Malet, fs. 262-5). Holstein invaded (Dec. 1863). Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: civil war. Case of the ironclads at Birkenhead. Correspondence: Lord Palmerston (fs. 5-8).
