VOL. 14F Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda relating mainly to foreign affairs. (Note: correspondence of Lord Palmerston and the Queen: J.R. continues to receive guidance and advice from Lord Palmerston. The Queen also, through her secretaries, is profuse with advice to J.R.). Politics and government: indemnity legislation: G. Hadfield's deputation to press for abolition of yearly bills (Qualification for Offices abolition bill 1863, defeated in the Lords). Government changes: Lord Palmerston appoints Lords de Grey and Hartington to war department; he feels that Hartington being the Duke of Devonshire's son "will tend to keep in order the Tory Colonels and Generals" (fs. 53-4). Trinity House: question of Prince of Wales's appointment as Master: the Queen's opposition; she considers "..... he is really very young of his age" (Phipps to J.R., fs. 57-60). Foreign affairs: Russia and Poland: the Polish insurrection. British government's protest to Russia (F.O. draft despatches, fs. 1-24); question of breaches by Russia of treaty of Vienna (1815); Lord Palmerston's conversations with Prince Czartoryski and Count Zamoyski (fs. 87-90).
