VOL. 14E Summary of Contents. Political correspondence relating to foreign affairs. (Note: J.R. continues to receive guidance and advice from Lord Palmerston: "..... this Draft of yours is too much like a newspaper article written by an irresponsible observer of events" (fs. 6-10). There are 41 letters from Palmerston in this volume. The Queen also, through her secretaries, is profuse with advice to J.R.). Foreign affairs: Greece: search for a king. Lord Palmerston fears that failure to propose a "good man" to Greece will drive them to establish a republic (f.25). Question of Duke Ernest of Coburg as king of Greece, with Prince Alfred to succeed him at Coburg; plan approved by the Queen but the duke's conditions are not acceptable to the British government (fs. 72-5; 80-4); the duke's refusal relieves Palmerston; he is suspicious of the duke's "wild look" (fs. 140-1). Question of Maximilian of Austria and other candidates. King of the Belgian's views (fs. 38-41). Prince William of Denmark as possible choice acceptable to Greece and approved by the Queen and Palmerston but Prince Christian of Denmark's conditions "cannot possibly be accepted" (fs. 259-62). Foreign affairs: Russia and Poland: the Polish uprising and the Queen's anxiety that the government abstain from interference (fs. 188-90). Lord Palmerston's concern for "these poor Poles (who) are almost sure to be cut down" (fs. 191-4). Foreign affairs: Russia and the Balkans: uneasiness in the government on account of Russian arming of Serbia. Foreign affairs: Italy: the Roman question. Palmerston approves J.R's suggestion of a "plebiscite as it is called" and hopes for a vote in favour of union with Italy (fs. 228-9). Prince Radali's proposals (fs. 239-50). Foreign affairs: Belgium: question of Antwerp and the Schldt duties: King of the Belgian's views (fs. 36-7). Foreign affairs: Egypt: Suez canal finance: Palmerston hopes it will not be found (fs. 126-7); his views upon the struggle between France and England for possession of Egypt (fs. 254-7). Foreign affairs: Diplomatic service: question of precedence of ambassadors. Correspondence: J.R.; Lord Palmerston; the Queen; King of the Belgians. Foreign affairs: The Queen tells J.R. that she wants one of her daughters present when she receives foreign ministers and ambassadors in audience (holo. letter, fs. 121-2). Personal: birth of a son to J.R's daughter Victoria; the Queen's congratulations (fs. 268-9).
