VOL. 14C Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda. (The Queen's correspondence: There are many notes, in this and other volumes, of letters received from the Queen and the Prince Consort; the originals were returned to the Queen at J.R's request to his executors see Vol. 14D f.238. Copy extracts are found in this and other volumes as listed). Following the Prince Consort's death, the Queen corresponded passim with J.R. through the Keeper of the Privy Purse, Col. Phipps, and her private secretary, Gen. Grey. J.R's directions to his executors to return, after his death, the letters of the Queen and Prince Consort to her majesty, is found in this volume, f. 238). Politics and government: death of Sir James Graham "..... his blameless and useful life" (Lord Dufferin to J.R., fs. 3-4). Illness and death of the Prince Consort (1861 Dec. 14): detailed reports from Sir C. B. Phipps (fs. 50-62; 65-71); he asks J.R. to "frame" a letter of formal announcement to foreign embassies for the Prince of Wales's signature, as commanded by the Queen "in this one instance to write for his disconsolate mother" (fs. 70-1). The Queen and question of a residence in England for Prince and Princess of Hesse (fs. 139-43); her proposed visit to Germany and title for purposes of incognito. Defence: J.R. opposes army reductions. Correspondence: Sir G. C. Lewis. Education: Edwin Chadwick's memorandum (fs. 12-17). Foreign affairs: Italy: proposed convention between the king and the pope; Lord Palmerston's doubts about the terms; question of Rome as capital of Italy. Foreign affairs: Austria and Venice: J.R's proposals (fs. 21-46). Foreign affairs: Belgium: J.R. complains that France receives preferential commercial treatment (fs. 89-90). Visit of King of the Belgians "..... his presence is soothing to the Queen (fs. 144-5). Correspondence: J.R.; Lord Howard de Walden. Foreign affairs: Mexico: question of ratification of treaty; need to avoid collision with the French. Correspondence: Lord Palmerston. Foreign affairs: Japan: disagreements between naval commander in chief, Sir J. Hope and British envoy R. Alcock. Correspondence: Duke of Somerset. Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: question of the confederate states and choice of consuls. The Trent affairs: Lord Lyons is grateful for the French ambassador's support (fs. 72-80); the Prince Consort's "last work" altering the despatch to Lord Lyons and so averting war (the Queen to J.R., f 116). Count Flahaut congratulates J.R. on his correct appraisal of Lincoln's character (fs. 114-15). Foreign affairs: Schleswig Holstein: diplomatic manoeuvres. Correspondence: J.R.; Count Bernstorff; the Queen. Foreign affairs: Slave trade: Lord Palmerston condemns the "barbarons practices" of the king of Dahomey (fs. 254-6).
