(The Queen's and Prince Consorts' correspondence: There are many notes, in this and other volumes, of letters received from the Queen and the Prince Consort; the originalswere returned to the Queen at J.R's request to his executors see Vol. 14D f.238. Copy extracts are found in this and other volumes as listed). Politics and government: question of a reform bill suspended due to the Italian "problem" (J.R. to Sir G. C. Lewis, fs. 194-9); but J.R. wants Lewis to gather data for a bill and to investigate bribery and corruption in sample boroughs. Foreign affairs: J.R. as foreign secretary; his instant involvement in the Italian war and uprisings. Italy, Austria and France: Foreign Office despatches to Lord Cowley (fs. 53-61; 77-106; 118-20) who presses for neutrality. Correspondence of J.R. and the Queen: her Austrian sympathies and concern for Prussia; her contra views on the government's pro Italian policy. French propositions for peace "..... the Emperor of the French is ..... anxious to gather in his laurels" (J.R. to the Queen, fs. 21-3); the armistice of Villafranca and resignation of Cavour. Garibaldi's campaign.
