Jewish disabilities and the oath: question of introduction of an oaths bill by resolution. Correspondence: J.R.; Sir W. Page Wood; F. H. Goldsmid; Lord Campbell. Reform: extension of franchise: Sir J. Graham's doubts about electoral districts based on population, and other problems (fs. 130-3; 144-9); Lord Shaftesbury's fears of "socialist doctrines and principles" (fs. 247-53); speculation on Lord Palmerston's attitude to a new bill; question of inclusion of reform in the Queen's speech. Correspondence: J.R.; Sir J. Graham; Sir C. Wood; Lords Shaftesbury, Grey; Sir F. Baring and others. J.R's Sheffield visit. Correspondence: H. E. Hoole. T. B. Question of deans' incomes. Correspondence: Sir G. Grey; Dean of Salisbury. Education: Edwin Chadwick's proposed heads for a commission (fs. 76-83). India: the Indian mutiny. Sir J. Graham's concern to find a "fit military dictator" (fs. 130-3); J.R's criticism of government inertia (fs. 137-8); and of Lord Palmerston's attitude (fs. 158-61). Questions of future administration of India and Indian religions: J.R. favours moderation and "no persecution of Hindu ceremonies ..... unless they are manifestly cruel and immoral" (fs. 264-5). Sir H. Ward reports calmness in Ceylon. Question of telegraph line to India via Turkey. Question of future of East India Company: J.R's plan; he thinks the company is "worn out as a government and cannot continue" but he favours an independent governing body (fs. 270-80); his regret at final dissolution of the company (fs. 293-4). Foreign affairs: Paris peace treaty (Crimean war) Lord Clarendon reports difficulties with Turkey and the evacuation of the Principalities (fs. 107-10). Personal: Death of Duchess of Bedford: Correspondence: Duke of Bedford; the Queen; Sir G. Grey and others. Personal: J.R's Life of C. J. Fox: his correspondence with Sir G. C. Lewis and Gen. C. R. Fox. Personal: Lord Holland and J.R's properties under the Fox wills: question of legal claims. Personal: Question of Sir G. Hayter's "great picture" remaining temporarily in the House of Commons (fs. 86-7). Personal: Duke of Bedford's concern about J.R's means: he urges J.R. to review his expenditure; he considers J.R's purchase of Rodborough "ill advised ..... two houses are enough for any younger brother" (fs. 164-8; 185-8) but he intends to help (fs. 192-3).
