Clarke to the Dean of Bristol "..... it has been whispered to me ....." (fs. 16-29). J.R. congratulates Sir G. C. Lewis on his "very honest budget" (fs. 57-8). Question of Scottish under representation in parliament (fs. 195-200). City of London election: J.R's doubts about standing; his London Tavern speech and quarrel with prominent liberal, John Dillon; letters from local supporters, opposition candidates and others; J.R. stands and is elected; letters of congratulation (numerous) from friends and strangers; election expenses: question of Dr. Black's fee (fs. 321-2).
