VOL. 13C Summary of Contents. Miscellaneous correspondence, mainly political. Politics and government: political gossip conveyed by W. W. Clarke to the Dean of Bristol "..... it has been whispered to me ....." (fs. 16-29). J.R. congratulates Sir G. C. Lewis on his "very honest budget" (fs. 57-8). Question of Scottish under representation in parliament (fs. 195-200). City of London election: J.R's doubts about standing; his London Tavern speech and quarrel with prominent liberal, John Dillon; letters from local supporters, opposition candidates and others; J.R. stands and is elected; letters of congratulation (numerous) from friends and strangers; election expenses: question of Dr. Black's fee (fs. 321-2). J.R's views on Palmerston administration (fs. 201-2); question of Lord Palmerston's attitude to reform, and of J.R. as leader in Palmerston's place. Question of vote by ballot: J.R's objections "..... the Elector is a trustee for the non-Elector" (quoted by E. C. Whiteside, fs. 323-4). The Queen on her intention to grant title of Prince Consort to Albert by letters patent (fs. 366-8).
