VOL. 13A Summary of Contents. Political correspondence. Politics and government: continued question of purchase of a newspaper; J.R. cannot advise his brother, the Duke of Bedford, to subscribe; he favours appointment of an editor of the Daily News "whocould be trusted" (fs. 21-4); he considers that "..... there is now no respectable liberal paper" (fs. 197-8). Correspondence of W. W. Clarke (the intermediary), the Dean of Bristol (the initiator) and Joseph Parkes, Edward Ellice and the Duke of Bedford (objectors). Question of civil service superannuation charges. Correspondence: George Russell. Municipal corporations: proposed amending act (1857): question of aldermen as ex officio magistrates. Correspondence: Sir G. Grey. British museum: administration matters. Correspondence: A. Panizzi. Education: question of a national system and the churches with special reference to Ireland; J.R's draft national plan (fs. 273-5); proposal to establish Victoria College (Wesleyan-Methodist) in Scotland. Correspondence: J.R.; J.R. Corballis; P. Erle; J. R. Gilpin; Prof. J. Pillans; Revd. J. Maclean. Foreign affairs: Crimea: speculation on terms of peace; question of use of the Vienna four points as basis of negotiation; Minto considers they are too vague; question of Russia conceding Bessarabia. Proposed peace conference at Paris and Clarendon's mission "..... I shall be treated just as you were, perhaps worse" (fs. 228-31). Count Nesselrode defines Russia's future foreign policy (fs. 248-53). Correspondence: J.R.; Lords Minto, Clarendon; Sir C. Wood and others. Ecclesiastical: Revd. Dr. A. C. Tait appointed bishop of London; his gratitude to J.R. for having placed him in the deanery of Carlisle (fs. 258). Correspondence of Sir G. Grey and Sir D. Dundas with J.R. on Ecclesiastical Commission matters. Personal: J.R's authorship: Longmans hope he will re-edit and issue his "Essay on the English Constitution" (1821). Thomas Longman's comments on the "unnecessary elaborate" index to 3rd and 4th vols of Macaulay's "History of England" (1856) (fs. 100-1). J.R's Life of C. J. Fox. Correspondence: C. H. Hartshorne.
