VOL. 12G Summary of Contents. Political and miscellaneous correspondence. Politics and government: continued question of purchase of a newspaper; correspondence of W. W. Clarke and the Dean of Bristol; J.R's doubts "..... such information as I get .....is too confidential ..... to be told" (fs. 67-8); search for advisers and money; J.R. considers that "..... if Ellice and Parkes can do nothing, nothing can be done" (fs. 91-2). H Labouchere accepts colonial office and seeks J.R's advice. Education: question of a future bill and vice presidency of the commission. Correspondence: J.R.; Lords Minto, Granville; Dean of Bristol; W. W. Clarke; E. Ellice; J. Parkes; H. Labouchere; Sir C. Wood. Foreign affairs: Italy and France: Lord Minto considers that the Italians "would very much prefer our protection" (fs. 28-31) and that the inaction of the British government is "leaving France in sole possession of the field" (f.83). Foreign affairs: Crimean war: speculation on peace terms; questions of Bessarabia, transfer of Russian territories to Austria and Russia's agreement to terms. Vienna aftermath: J.R's explanation (fs. 46A-7); Charles Greville considers the negotiations were "a sham and a delusion" and that to send J.R. to conduct them was "an injury and an insult to him" (fs. 47-54). Correspondence: J.R.; Lords Palmerston, Minto; Duke of Bedford; R. Cobden; C. Greville; H. Drummond and others. Personal: Duke of Bedford's revived correspondence with J.R. on public and personal matters; his views on the problems of owning racehorses (fs. 32-6). J.R's Exter Hall lecture to Y.M.C.A.: letters of congratulation; his thanks to secretary Shipton for the arrangements by which "..... upwards of 4,000 persons were placed without confusion" (f.89).
