Politics and government: J.R's resignation: letters of condolence, regret etc.; Press antagonism: J.R. complains of "this vile tyranny of the Times" (fs. 26-8); the anger of his friends against that newspaper; "..... that infamous journal" (Enfield, fs. 51-4); Dean Elliot of Bristol's proposal that a newspaper be bought in which to restore J.R's political reputation; the dean's correspondence with W. W. Clarke as intermediary on the project. Registrar General's proposal to use the census for obtaining education statistics. Correspondence: J.R.; Dr. E. Rigby; C. P. Villiers; J. Abel Smith; Sir H. Bulwer; Lords Minto, Enfield, Panmure; Drouyn de Lhuys; Duke of Bedford; D. R. Pigot; Dean of Bristol; W. W. Clarke; G. Graham; H. Mann.
