VOL. 12E Summary of Contents. Political correspondence. Politics and government: question of length and dates of parliamentary sessions; cabinet views. Crisis in J.R's political career: Duke of Argyll is "disgusted with the violence and injustice of the Press, and the Clubs against you" (fs. 110-13). Commons debates: J.R. is accused of having supported the Austrian peace plan while remaining a member of the war cabinet; Sir E. Bulwer-Lytton's motion of censure on J.R., and junior ministers' round robin in support of the motion. J.R. resigns: (fs. 110-13): Wood thinks he has "acted wisely" (fs. 133-6); Sir G. C. Lewis considers that the dual role in which J.R. went to Vienna was the origin of events leading to his resignation; letters (numerous) of comment, regret etc. from colleagues, friends and strangers; praise for J.R's "magnificent speech" (of July 19) from Lord Granville (fs. 185-6) and others. Sir W. Molesworth succeeds J.R. as colonial secretary; dismay at the appointment; J.R's views on his own and the government's future (fs. 209-10); Clarendon replies to J.R's charges against him of lack of support (fs. 213-17). Foreign affairs: Crimea and Vienna: Cavour instructs envoy d'Azeglio to insist on greater recognition of Sardinia's contribution to the war (fs. 3-6). Vienna: the Austrian "counterpoise" proposal and J.R's political career (see Politics and government). Detailed statement of mission expenses (fs. 24-6). Death of Lord Raglan (June 28). Correspondence: Count Cavour; Lord Clarendon; Duke of Argyll; E. Hammond and others. Foreign affairs: Abyssinia: British government anxious to establish trade; detailed report on political and social state of that country, and on character etc. of its King, Theodore II.
