VOL. 12D Summary of Contents. Political correspondence relating mainly to the Vienna conference. Politics and government: Kennedy dismissal: legal view. Sir G. C. Lewis's budget problems "..... this Crimean expedition ..... a maw which swallows up million after million" (fs. 107-10). Politics and government: J.R's wish to leave the cabinet (fs. 131-2; 257-8). Correspondence: J.R.; F. Romilly; Sir G. C. Lewis; Lord Clarendon. Foreign affairs: Crimea and Vienna: Sir G. C. Lewis deplores engagement in a war "in which both means and ends (are) so ill-defined" (fs. 107-10): Lord Lansdowne considers the conference has failed (fs. 1-2). Failure to resolve question of Russian naval forces in the Black sea. Lord Stratford's controversial views on the future of the Principalities: J.R. urges his recall: visit of Turkish representatives to Vienna and their assurances on treatment of Christian subjects. Crimea and Vienna: J.R's depression: he feels he has "lost the confidence of (his) employers" (fs. 48-9) and objects to "disapproving" telegrams; Clarendon denies J.R's charges. Lord Cowley reports French disappointment with progress of the conference; Drouyn's proposed visit with his plan to neutralise the Black sea; Clarendon considers that the French are afraid of Russia and Sir H. Bulwer reports that in "Paris ..... the general feeling tends to almost any peace" (fs. 56-60). Louis Napoleon's visit to London. Crimea and Vienna: Lord Bloomfield reports that Prussia can only be brought to our side "by fear" (fs. 71-4). Austria's "counterpoise" plan: Clarendon's doubts; Westmorland's accusatory letter to J.R.; Clarendon defends Austria's hesitation to support Britain and France at war "when she finds that the whole of their military force is cooped up in a corner of the Crimea" (fs. 180-4). Crimea and Vienna: J.R's return: signing of the final protocol; Drouyn's plan turned down by French government and he resigns; J.R. feels responsible for Drouyn's downfall. Statement of J.R's personal conference expenses (fs. 236-7).
