VOL. 12C Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda mainly concerned with the Vienna conference. Politics and government: J.R's City of London election: move to unseat him defeated. T. F. Kennedy's dismissal: Treasury minute. Cabinet and junior appointments: Sir G. Grey reports that "..... Labouchere is much annoyed at being left out" (fs. 49-52); J.R's objection to Sir Robert Peel as his colonial under secretary. Criticism of Lord Palmerston from Sir D. Le Marchant and Lord Hatherton considers that he (Palmerston) relies too much on "the curative quality of time" (fs. 143-4). Correspondence: J. Abel Smith; J. Wilson; W. E. Gladstone; Lords Carlisle, Hatherton; Sir G. Grey; Sir D. Le Marchant; W. R. Greg. Foreign affairs: Crimea and Vienna: the four points (bases); questions of limitation of Russian naval forces in the Black Sea; Turkey's treatment of her Christian subjects; the Danube Principalities and Serbia. Question of Prussian participation (fs. 1-21). Death of Emperor Nicholas of Russia; hopes for a change of Russian attitude to the war but Lord Minto dislikes the idea of a "mischievous" armistice (fs. 33-4). Lord Clarendon tells J.R. "your despatches ..... have a breadth and depth which we are not accustomed to here" (fs. 41-8); J.R's Black Sea proposals (fs. 87-93); he defines the objectives of the conference (fs. 101-25). Prussia's proposals and assurances if invited to participate; J.R's complaint against the Times for a "garbled report" of his conversations with Manteuffel and the King of Prussia; he wants Clarendon to "..... stop such things in future" (fs. 214-15). France: Louis Napoleon's letter to Emperor Francis Joseph regretting Austria's failure to support the allies at the conference (fs. 229-36). Lord Clarendon considers that "..... Buol ..... is clearly bent on a patch up" (fs. 284-93). The war: question of Polish deserters and war prisoners to serve in a separate corps; newspaper criticism of Lord Raglan; his report from the Crimea (fs. 252-9). Dismay and disillusion at home: Lord Ribblesdale considers that "we swaggered a great deal too much about our army" (fs. 188-9). Correspondence: J.R.; Lords Westmorland, Minto, Clarendon, Stratford, Panmure, Bloomfield, Raglan, Ribblesdale; Duke of Bedford; L. de Rothschild; Counts Usedom, Bernstorff, Zamoyski, Bourqueney. Colonial affairs: Sir George Grey, holding dual office of Home and Colonies in J.R's absence, keeps him in touch with colonial matters. Colonial affairs: Cape of Good Hope: Lord Panmure agrees to despatch of troops to the Cape but "earnestly prays that little wars" can be avoided at the present time and governor Sir George Grey hopes for a better future for this "so long distracted country" (fs. 63-8). Colonial affairs: Victoria: Ballarat riots; question of pardoned convicts and the constitutional bill; Sir G. Grey considers migration of ex convicts from Van Diemensland to the Victoria goldfields "a serious evil" (fs. 216-19).
