VOL. 12B Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda relating mainly to the Vienna mission. Politics and government: Palmerston's refusal to oppose Roebuck's committee of enquiry; resignation of Peelite cabinet members after a "long and disagreeable" cabinet meeting (Clarendon, fs. 85-8). J.R. invited by Lord Palmerston to rejoin the government (fs. 115-16); J.R. chooses the Colonial Office but decides to continue the Vienna mission (see Foreign Affairs); gratitude of his friends; J. Abel Smith considers he has "saved Lord Palmerston's government" (fs. 155-60); J.R's views on cabinet reconstruction (fs. 125-8); Sir G. C. Lewis's "reluctant but patriotic" acceptance of the chancellorship (Clarendon, fs. 163-6); continued hostility of the Times. Appointments: "..... all the young Gents below the Gangway ..... want to be Secretaries of State at once" (Clarendon, fs. 163-6). J.R's City of London election: appointment of an agent. Staffing the mission; Lord Clarendon's anxiety that conference should not begin before J.R. arrives; his embarrassment at giving J.R. instructions and his solicitude for J.R's comfort on the journey "..... pray have a fur bag to put your legs in" (fs. 41-2). J.R's conference plan (fs. 43-4); Lord Brougham's warning about Russian envoy, Prince Gorchakov "..... he may deceive even Buol" (fs. 51-6). The journey: J.R's interview with Emperor Napoleon (fs. 117-22) and with King of the Belgians (fs. 152-4); Queen Victoria's letters of introduction to King and Queen of Prussia (fs. 59-69). Conference memoranda, historical notes, draft addresses and treaty articles etc. (fs. 207-88). The war: Sir G. C. Lewis considers that the capture of Sebastopol would "not cripple the power of Russia" (fs. 83-4); report on the naval situation (fs. 70-7). Correspondence: J.R.; Sir G.
