Politics and government: charitable trusts commission: question of disposal of tithe rates; Civil List pensions: Lord Aberdeen's doubts about eligibility of certain (named) recipients (fs. 42-3). Municipal administrative reform: Sir B. Hall's scheme (fs. 61-8). Lord Clarendon's concern about Aberdeen's state of health and mind (fs. 206-9); J.R's anxiety about the government and his wish to leave it (fs. 215-27). Question of a successor to commissioner T. F. Kennedy, dismissed from Office of Woods. Correspondence: J.R.; Revd. R. Jones; Sir B. Hall; Lords Aberdeen and Clarendon; T. F. Kennedy; Col. F. Romilly. Foreign affairs: Crimean war: Lord Clarendon's campaign reports: preparations to attack Sebastopol; the French battering train at the Dardanelles; hopes for a speedy fall of Sebastopol frustrated by delays and disappointments; question of its disposal after capture; question of winter quarters for the armies; complaints about inadequacies of the French force and its commander, Marshal St. Arnaud "..... Napoleon I would not have employed such a Charlaton" (fs. 73-8); death of St. Arnaud. A. H. Layard's eyewitness account of the landing before Sebastopol (fs. 48-60).
