VOL. 11D Summary of Contents. Political and administrative correspondence; memoranda relating to conduct of the Crimean war. Politics and government: separation of departments of war and colonies: Queen and cabinet unanimously in favour; consequent cabinet and governmental changes; Lord Aberdeen's coalition problems "..... I do not look to parity in the cabinet" but he feels that members of his own party may be "aggrieved" (fs. 126-7). Question of an office for J.R.: his attempt to leave the government; he accepts office of Lord President of the Council; his criticism of the conduct of the war "..... the Cabinet have shown so much indecision" (fs. 12-17). Office of Woods etc: Chief Commissioner Kennedy's dismissal; he seeks J.R's support; Gladstone's views (fs. 243-6). General Register Office: question of G. Sowray's services. Board of Health: Lord Palmerston's proposal to place under a secretary of state. Charity Commission administration. Correspondence: J.R.; Lords Aberdeen, Minto, Granville, Shaftesbury, Palmerston; W. E. Gladstone; Sir G. Grey; Edward Strutt; George Graham; T. F. Kennedy; Edwin Chadwick; P. Erle and others. Legal: Lord Cranworth's concern at delays in testamentary legislation (Administration of Estates Act 1854). Bribery act (1854): proposed amendments. Question of bankruptcy legislation in Ireland. Conduct of the war: cabinet members' memoranda; Lord Clarendon's uncertainties but "Palmerston is perpetually making new maps of Europe" (fs. 22-5). Sir C. Wood's anxiety to "get Austria into the field" (fs. 28-31); J.R. urges treaty of alliance with Sweden: financing the war: Gladstone's views (fs. 221-2); question of loan to Turkey. Lord Clarendon reports to J.R. on course of the war: Lord Raglan's strategy; cholera; morale of French troops; transport of men and material; Prussian, Austrian and Swedish attitudes etc. (fs. 277-8; 281-96; 303-4). Correspondence: Edward Everett; Lord Clarendon. Education: Oxford University act 1854; question of appointment of commissioners and secretary, and administrative details arising from the act.
