VOL. 10H Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda. Politics and government: J.R. resigns as foreign secretary (Feb. 21) but remains in the cabinet and as leader of the House; his explanation to the Queen (fs. 59-62). Gladstone outlines his budget plans; question of income tax reduction to 6d (fs. 118-23; 168-9). J.R. deplores Scottish antagonism to Peelite legal appointments. Railways committee: Edward Cardwell's views "..... legal amalgamation is better than secret combination" (fs. 57-8). Correspondence: J.R.; Lord Aberdeen; W. E. Gladstone; E. Cardwell and others. Foreign affairs: France: ministerial changes: Lord Cowley reports that the new empress "cannot endure Drouyn de Lhuys" (fs. 14-15). Question of Pope's attendance at the coronation. Foreign affairs: Turkey, France, Austria and Russia: questions of the Holy Places and of Montenegro. Sir H. Seymour considers that Russia will "never seize upon Turkey" but will "reduce her to vassalage" (fs. 49-50). Increasing tension; Austrian closure of Adriatic ports. Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: fisheries question; position of Prince Edward Island. Correspondence: Sir A. Bannerman. Education: question of inclusion of parish schools in the national system. Religion in Scottish schools: Duke of Argyll considers that a "common scheme for Scotland is ..... full of peril" (fs. 146-9). Oxford University reform. Correspondence: Duke of Argyll; Lords Aberdeen, Minto; Sir J. Graham; W. E. Gladstone. Ecclesiastical: clergy reserves legislation: Question of reversion of vacant livings to the Crown. Correspondence: Sir C. Wood; Lord Aberdeen. Personal: Thomas Moore's journals and the Byron scandal "..... it is fortunate ..... that Moore's papers have fallen into your hands" (Lord Broughton, fs. 126-7). Birth of J.R's daughter Agatha (d. 1933).
