VOL. 10F Summary of Contents. Political correspondence and memoranda. Politics and government: Liberal party strategy for debate on the Address. J.R's eve of session dinner: Sir James Graham's "frank" letter of refusal (fs. 8-11). The free trade question: voting plans. Lord Derby anxious not to provoke an amendment to the address but J.R. states he "must go into the House perfectly unfettered" (fs. 19-22). Fall of Derby government (Dec. 17); Lord Aberdeen forms his coalition ministry; J.R. reluctantly accepts post of foreign secretary on assurance that he will shortly be replaced; Lord Palmerston's advice to reject the double post of foreign secretary and leader of the House (fs. 117-20; 139-40). Lord Lansdowne concerned at the "preponderance of Peelites in the new cabinet" (fs. 56-7); Lord Grey rejects cabinet post on anti reform grounds. Appointments sought and bestowed, rejected and refused; Lord Aberdeen trusts "that we have now nearly come to an end of our patronage difficulties" (fs. 178-9). The ballot question: John Bright's views (f. 70). J.R's City of London election. Correspondence: J.R.; E. J.R's praise for British ambassador, Lord Cowley; Lord Malmesbury advises that embassy in Paris should be improved to match the new "ostentation" in France - "..... the house is filthy"(fs. 214-15). Foreign affairs: Italy: Lord Minto reports on his meetings with Italian politicians (fs. 14-18). Foreign affairs: Russia and Turkey: continued tension. Correspondence: Prince Adam Czartoryski. J.R's anxiety that France should not "subject the unfortunate Sultan to pressure" (fs. 186-7). Foreign affairs: U.S.A.: British legation secretary stresses need to settle the fisheries question; proposed trade convention with U.K. Correspondence J. Crampton; E. Everett. Colonial affairs: Cape of Good Hope: statement of numbers killed in the Kaffir wars. Correspondence: Lord Grey. Personal: Thomas Moore's journals: his widow, Bessie, is grateful for J.R's "kind and constant affection" (fs. 2-3). Personal: Gift to J.R. of a barrel of Newtown pippins from Abbott Lawrence, Boston, U.S.
