Politics and government: Lord Derby in office; Duke of Bedford considers that the Conservatives "have no confidence in Dizzy" (fs. 40-3); Sir C. Wood has heard that there are "heart burnings and jealousies in the government" (fs. 144-7). J.R's negotiations with Peelites: Lord Aberdeen favourable towards a "cordial concert" with the whigs but advises J.R. against aspirations to leadership of the coalition (fs. 52-3); Lord Clarendon considers that "the 45 Irish Brigands may hold the balance (rather than) the 30 Peelites" (fs. 54-8); J.R. asserts that he would not "lead the H(ouse) of C(ommons) for any Peer Prime Minister" in the Lords (fs. 99-100). J.R. and Lord Aberdeen agree on a joint policy based on Peelites' agreement to defend free trade. Election post mortems: Cornwall; Huntingdon: question of liberalism and the small farmer. Reform: Sir Charles Wood hopes that the franchise can be given to "select bodies", to include the "highest description of .... manufacturers" (fs. 32-9). Lord Clarendon's views on the nature of contemporary politics (fs. 54-8; 79-87); his summary of J.R's six years in office (fs. 183-9). Disraeli proposes nomination of late speaker (C. S.
