VOL. 9E Summary of Contents. Political and administrative correspondence and memoranda. Politics and government: J.R's plan for a new reform bill (memorandum, fs.68-77) and the Queen and Prince Albert's views thereon (fs. 116-128). Lord Palmerston and the Queen: her opinion of his conduct (memorandum of 1850, fs. 78-81). J.R's proposal to invite Sir James Graham to join the government: views of cabinet colleagues. Sir George Grey's illness: "....... what a precious life is his" - (Fox Maule, fs. 50-3). Queen's proposed visit to Manchester: preparations. Interment acts: administrative problems; Lord Seymour asserts that "..... the board (of Health) are pledged against pit burial" (fs. 84-5). Travelling allowances: Treasury messengers complain of inequality with other departments. Kew Gardens: Sir William Hooker's request for a grant to enable publication of his son's Himalayan collection. Problem of shipping Cleopatra's Needle from Alexandria: F. A. Lloyd's proposals (fs. 286-9). Correspondence: J.R.; the Queen; Prince Albert; Lords Lansdowne, Grey, Palmerston, Seymour; Fox Maule; Lord and Lady Ellesmere; William Brown; Sir John Potter; Sir W. Hooker; Sir F. Baring; Sir C. Wood; Sir G. Grey; G. C.Lewis; Dr Sir B. L. Brodie; J. A. Lloyd and others. Great Exhibition: question of retaining the Crystal Palace. Correspondence: J.R.; Stafford Northcote; Sir G. Grey; Sir C. Wood; Lord Seymour. Scotland: church of Scotland memorial on parochial schools. Question of Prof. John Wilson's pension. Balmoral: ministers in residence - "..... the Court is not my atmosphere" (Fox Maule, fs. 50-3). Ireland: leasehold amending legislation: Lord Donegall's protest - "..... the inhabitants (of Belfast) are one and all my tenants" (fs. 27-28). Lord Grey advises that "we had better let Ward play out the game his own way" - (fs. 3-4), but considers his (Ward's) "atto di governo unconstitutional" (fs. 85 A-B). Colonial affairs: Cape of Good Hope (Cape Colony): Lord Grey's dissatisfaction with Sir H. Smith's administration. Preparation of new ordinances. Military force deployed. Ecclesiastical: episcopal estates legislation: question of a select committee. Correspondence: Lords Shaftesbury, Fitzwilliam, H. Goulburn and others. Education: tutorial obligations of Professor of Modern Languages at Cambridge. Correspondence Sir J. Stephen. Parochial schools see Scotland. Personal: Lord Ribblesdale (stepson) pleads for J.R's approval to his intention to own racehorses (fs. 9-12). Charles Greville considers Ribblesdale "has done a very foolish thing" - (fs. 92-3). Personal: Gift to J.R. of 2½ dozen bottles of "Victoria Wine" from J. Bear of Melbourne. Personal: William Russell's advice to J.R. on deer stalking (f.160).
