VOL. 8E Summary of Contents. Political and administrative correspondence and memoranda. Politics and government: death of Sir Robert Peel. Correspondence: Lord Stanley; Sir J. Graham; Duke of Bedford; H. Goulburn and others. Lord Clarendon considers Peel's death .... "a great national calamity" (fs. 112-13). Appointments to Land Revenue and Board of Health. Correspondence: Lords Carlisle, Fortescue; Hon. C. Gore. Appointment of Sir D. Le Marchant as Chief Clerk, House of Commons: the Speaker tells J.R. ".... I will do my best to train him". Civil List accounting. Correspondence: Lord Monteagle. Lord Campbell on representative government and bribery. House of Commons: question of conversion of a temporary roof into a permanent one: Sir C. Wood writes ".... Barry wishes to do it" (fs. 239-40). Legal: resignations and administrative changes resulting from retirement of Lord Cottenham (Lord Chancellor) and appointment of Sir Thomas Wilde (later Lord Truro).
