Baring; Lords Lansdowne, Minto; Sir C. Wood and others. Politics and government: Municipal elections returns. J.R's draft (undated) of the Queen's speech. Validity of oaths: memoranda and draft preamble to an amending bill. Lord Auckland's death; question of a successor at the Admiralty; J.R. favours a Peelite. Correspondence: H. G. Ward; Lords Morpeth, Minto, Lansdowne, Palmerston; Sir James Graham; Bishop of Sodor and Man; Hon. Frances Eden. Ireland: Maynooth College: staff salaries. French and Irish clergy: salary comparisons. Renewal of the Suspension Act (Feb. 1849) considered "indispensable" by Lord Clarendon (fs. 268-73). Employment the main problem; need for further loans to unions (act of Mar. 9); financing of emigration; cabinet policy disagreements; J.R's tax proposals; Lord Lansdowne threatens resignation on question of unified tax.
