Local election matters; departures to constituencies. J.R. considers withdrawal from City of London but stands and wins. T.B. Macaulay's Edinburgh election and his "extreme" unpopularity (fs. 214-15). Bills concerning health of towns, railways and Catholic education postponed. Politics and government: Life peerages: legal opinion. Duke of Wellington's statue: J.R's apologetic letter (fs.130-1). Politics and government: Correspondence: J.R; Sir G. Larpent; Sir D. Le Marchant; Sir G. Grey; Lords Cottenham, Morpeth, Grey, Lansdowne; S. J. Loyd and others. Ireland: J.R's state of Ireland memorandum (fs.84-7); his proposals to combat distress in the coming winter. Proposed legislation on sale of encumbered estates: legal opinions. Statement of weekly numbers on relief rations. American contributions to distress relief. Ireland: Mrs K. C. Maberley refutes scandal respecting her friendship with late Lord Bessborough.
