VOL. 6A Summary of Contents. Political and administrative correspondence. Politics and government: question of opening ports and freight rates. Schedules of excise revenue and exchequer payments; anxiety about withdrawal of currency to meet railway costs. Correspondence: Sir C. Wood; Lord Clarendon; J. Pattison and others. Ireland: relief costs and failure of localities to raise funds. Legislative discussion: fisheries; labour rate; landlord and tenant; coercion. Question of temporary or permanent measures. Food supply. Sir John Burgoyne as relief commissioner; organisation of district relief committees. Irish Judges: J.R. has an "utter detestation" of their jobbery (fs.209-10). Correspondence: J.R; Lords Bessborough, Clanricarde, Oranmore, Devon, Lansdowne; H. Labouchere and others. Defence: abstract of draft militia bill (England) 1847. Harbour Commission: construction of Newhaven. Secret war plans committee. Correspondence: Lords Auckland, Dundonald. Foreign affairs: Austria and Poland: question of free state of Cracow. Lord Palmerston's views. Portugal: naval manoeuvres off Portuguese coast. Spain: the Spanish marriages. Question of wording of Lord Palmerston's draft; the Queen finds it "obscure" (fs.56-7). Colonial affairs: Canada: cost of settling immigrants Ceylon: search for a new governor. Ecclesiastical: Welsh sees; creation of new bishoprics; constitutional changes in Ecclesiastical Commission. Ecclesiastical: Correspondence: Archbishop of Canterbury and others. Education: Eton Montem. Correspondence of Dr. E. Hawtrey: he requests Queen's decision on continuance of custom. Personal: Duke of Bedford's letters on settlements and other family and public matters.
