Queen's speech: inclusion of pledge to revise corn, sugar and timber duties and to augment revenue to meet expenses of Canada, China and the Mediterranean. JR to Sir Robert Peel on intended course at re-opening of parliament; speculation respecting Peel's fiscal policy. JR's addresses to City of London electors. Correspondence with Lord Stanley on Colonial Office matters. Resignations. Lord William Russell recalled by Lord Aberdeen. Election of Speaker: question of a Tory; C.S. Lefevre re-elected. Queen's personal letter to JR. regretting fall of government; Lord Melbourne's letter to her praising Prince Albert. Civil List pensions: possible beneficiaries; JR thinks that "Wordsworth may as well be left to Sir Robert Peel" [fs. 62-3]. Lord Palmerston's views on extension of suffrage and the ballot.
