VOL. 3E Summary of Contents. Correspondence and memoranda mainly on the Eastern Question Foreign affairs: Egypt: Mehmet Ali, Syria and Turkey; Russia, Austria, France and England. French political strategy; danger of war; Thiers and Guizot. Acute anxiety and disagreements of British cabinet; JR threatens resignation; Melbourne begs him "for God's sake do not bring on a crisis" [fs. 113-14]. JR tells Melbourne "it is Palmerston's object to drive me out of office" [fs. 161-2]. JR assures Guizot that newspaper reports "do not express the sentiments of the government" [fs.141-3]. Syrian revolt quelled. Question of Austria as negotiator. Cabinet agrees to JR's proposals to conciliate France; success of this policy. Correspondence: JR; Lords Melbourne, Palmerston, Clarendon, Spencer, Holland, Lansdowne, William Russell; Duke of Bedford; Charles Greville; Joseph Hume; Foreign Office intelligence.
