1243-1434
Rolls containing enrolments of writs of a special character which do not appear on the main series of close rolls.
These include writs of respite from taking up knighthood, 1256-58; mandates for the livery of the lands of rebels against Henry III, 1265-67; writs of respite from assizes, etc, for those in the king's service in Scotland, 1302-4; and writs of resumption of grants made by Edward II, 1311-12.
Also, writs of Richard II to the keepers of the passage in various ports, directing them to permit the persons specified to go beyond the sea; and writs to foreign merchants empowering them to issue letters of exchange, 1382-1434, which at one time formed a separate series known as 'Exchange Rolls'.
