Description

Ministry of Home Security Research and Experiments Branch: tests on resistance of brick walls and concrete shelter linings, effects of an explosion on a water filled trench, penetration of projectiles into steel and concrete, and bruising caused by a blast, on the lungs of a rabbit. Map of Coventry showing effects of a bombing raid on its centre, casualties and damage caused. Photographs taken during research projects.

(1 - 3) Report ARP/30/FGT: Further tests of the resistance of brick walls to lateral pressure. Photographs showing test apparatus and wall before trial.

(4 - 8) Report ARP/30/FGT: 'Further tests of the resistance of brick walls to lateral pressure.' Photographs showing damage to walls achieved through trials.

(9) Report ARP/42/ACW: 'The resistance to penetration of concrete blocks embedded in clay.' Bricks arranged on clay base within trial case.

(10 - 19) Report ARP/40/GB: 'Bombing tests on concrete linings, brick shelters and steel frame, Stewartby, 16th March, 1940. Clay subsoil.' 7 sheets, each with photographs of test materials before and after explosion trial. Each image has its own descriptive note.

(20 - 21) Report ARP/44/ACW: 'The penetration of rotating and non-rotating projectiles into steel and concrete.' Photographs showing impact damage to trial samples.

(22) Report RC 107: 'An Investigation of Probable Air Raid Damage' by Professor J D Bernal and Dr F Garwood. Photograph of a street plan of central Coventry annotated to show possible bomb sites.

(23) - 30) Report RC 108: 'Brief Report by Professor S Zuckerman of Experimental Work on the Physiological Effects of Blast'. Photographs of lungs, from various animals, studied during the research project.
